America’s birthday and fireworks go hand in hand! For 250 years, we have looked up at the bright, colorful skies to celebrate our freedom. Here is the amazing story of how our loudest and proudest tradition began.

July 4, 1776: The Dream Begins America was officially born! The Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. They dreamed of a free, brave country. Even before the ink was dry, John Adams knew we needed to celebrate with grand “illuminations” (fireworks) to show our immense joy.

July 4, 1777: The First Birthday Bash Exactly one year later, America threw its very first birthday party in Philadelphia. The city rang bells, played music, and fired off loud cannons. But the best part of the night? The sky lit up with a beautiful fireworks show. Our favorite tradition had officially started!

1870: A National Holiday Nearly one hundred years later, the United States made the Fourth of July an official national holiday. Families all over the country started coming together. They hosted backyard barbecues, marched in local parades, and lit their own sparklers and fireworks to celebrate as a community.
